BRAZEN HOUSE: Micro Nerds, Macro Fun
Brazen House is the world’s first biotech launch house, strategically located 5 blocks from Redondo Beach and 5 miles to the laboratory.
Earlier this month, Brazen House was the site of the SoCal Microbiology and Biotech Meetup, the brainchild of three local startup founders — Nathan Brown, PhD; Lorenzo D’Amico, PhD; and Shu Li, PhD.
Monthly meetup for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs interested in microbiology and biotech. Meet new friends and share thoughts over beers.
Also, in attendance was a strong USC grad school contingent and three founders from the BRZN01 cohort!

We would like to thank Frank C. Feder and B Medical Systems [purveyors of fine medical refrigerators and freezers… an Electrolux company] for providing Brazen House with the most advanced beer fridge in the goddam world [model B401].
Anecdotal, but the most popular beer of the evening: Sapporo. 🍚🍺
VC CORNER: Incubator or Accelerator?
Contributed by Scott Alpizar, PhD — Accelerators and incubators are becoming increasingly popular in the life sciences. They are often leveraged by early-stage startups to help grow their businesses and get connected. But which one do you choose?
INCUBATORS: Focused on innovation, often pay to play. Typically for startups refining their business plans and navigating challenges from the idea stage through the growth stage.
Allow for collaboration and co-creation among participating startups.
Structured support from mentors and industry experts.
Access to coworking space, conference rooms, laboratory space, etc.
Can be sponsored/run by VCs, government entities, major corporations, etc.
Examples: Blueprint Health, QB3, JLABS, BioLabs
ACCELERATORS: Focused on scaling, often fully funded. Typically for startup companies who are further along and have a minimum viable product (MVP), may have formed a prototype, and may have already received pre-seed funding.
Have defined start and end dates, typically 3-6 months.
Program specifically focused on one industry or sector.
Likely to achieve key milestones with peers at similar stages.
Access to angel investors and VCs who work directly with the accelerators.
Examples: Y Combinator, MedTech Innovator, IndieBio, TechStars LA
Brazen Breakdown
Growing a startup isn’t easy. You need to build community, find the right mentors and advisors, and get connected to funding sources.
Accelerators and incubators make all of this possible, but can especially enhance your ability to find funding — 33% of all startups that successfully raised Series A funding in the US went through an accelerator or incubator.
JLABS companies have raised over $61 Billion in funding and strategic partnerships since 2012. Foresite Capital recently raised $173 Million to back life-sciences startups in their own incubator. Incubators in Europe have high expectations as well.
Joining a startup incubator or business accelerator program provides an ideal environment to make these strategic connections possible, increasing the odds of long-term success. — Ann Arbor SPARK
[PS: We’re still confused too. The Brazen Fellowship is kind of like an incub-erator or accel-ubator, which is exactly why we call it a “fellowship” 🥴 — ed.]
BTW… Apply to the BRZN02 cohort!
All this accelerator/incubator talk reminds us that Brazen Bio is now accepting applications for our second cohort (BRZN02) of the Brazen Fellowship! This batch is slated to begin in mid-June 2022.
