Brazen Bio and Northpond Ventures (NPV) are co-hosting an invitation-only biotech founder happy hour at Brazen House (the first ever biotech launch house) next week.

Brazen Summit is Coming Home to LA
Brazen Summit is the first in-person conference (and blowout afterparty) of its kind: FOR bio-founders, BY bio-founders. The theme, fittingly: āRise of the Scientist-CEO.ā
Join us in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 12, 2022 for Brazen Summit!
San Diego was the original location we selected (to take advantage of the International BIO meeting occurring across the street). However, we realized most of our speakers and attendees (and us lol) werenāt going to BIO. So, we decided to keep it real and bring it back to Los Angeles where it rightfully belongs! #LONGLA
The event speakers and program are being finalized but here are some sneak peeks:
āWomen Biotech Foundersā panel including Alice Zhang (Cofounder & CEO of Verge Genomics YC S15 who recently raised a $98M Series B) and moderated by the amazing #SciComm powerhouse, Susanna Harris, PhD (Senior Manager, Engagement and Communications at Xontogeny).
āBootstrapping Biotechā panel with the brazen Ethan Perlstein, PhD (Founder & CEO of Perlara, YC W16), Monica Berrondo, PhD (Cofounder & CEO of Macromoltek, YC W18), our own Shawn Carbonell, MD, PhD, and others.
āEarly-Stage Biotech Investorsā panel moderated by Scott Alpizar, PhD (Senior Associate, Foundation Venture Capital Group) and featuringāamong other VC starsāour friend, kick-ass surgeon, and the newest Venture Partner at Wavemaker 360, Monica Jain, MD.
Stay tuned for more updatesā¦ [wait until we tell you who we have as Keynote Speaker!]

VC Corner: Are we ready for Decentralized Biotech?
Contributed by Scott Alpizar, PhD ā Itās no secret that biotech in the US has historically been centralized, largely to the coasts. While new biotech hubs have started to pop up in places like Texas and Denver [and LA!!!], a new trend is fueling biotechās growth outside of these hubs: decentralized biotech.
What the hell is decentralized biotech? How does that work? Well, last week Dr. Jocelynn Pearl, a biotech scientist, company builder, and host of UltraRare The Podcast, shared a guide. Letās break it down!
Decentralized biotech centers itself (pun intended) around a few main ideas:
Coworking/Cloud Labs. Everything from shared lab space to AI-powered āCloud labsā. Fully virtual companies have become an option.
Empowering Talent. The founder-led biotech movement is in full swing and founder-centered funds are emerging (see Petri and Axial).
Next-Level Collaboration. Perlara and Phage Directory have embraced the power of community.
Biotech DAOs. DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) are relatively new smart contract-based entities that enable the coordination of capital, talent, and crowd intelligence. Molecule has been a driving force in the space with VitaDAO, PsyDAO, and labDAO, but anyone can build their own DAO.
Brazen Breakdown
Decentralized modelsā¦ lower the barrier to entry for smaller companies and harness the talents of a more diverse pool of scientists, potentially hastening the development of new drugs and, hopefully, effective cures.
Indeed, today, a virtual company in the Midwest can see the same success as one in Boston andāas Jocelyn says to close her pieceāwhat really matters is that it is a benefit to patients.
