Cultures of Quality: A Secret Weapon for Biotech Leaders (sponsored)
Quality management used to be a tickbox exercise looked after by a single department: document procedures, audit processes, get a certificate for the wall, rinse and repeat.
Forward-thinking biotech leaders are realizing thereās a better way.
While adhering to quality standards like cGMP and ICH Q10 has always been important for a highly regulated industry like biotechnology, the emphasis is now shifting - from quality as ābare minimum must-haveā to quality as business-wide enabler of growth, continuous improvement and competition-busting.
And to that end, more and more biotech companies are attempting to instill quality into the heart of their operational cultures.
BRAZEN BREAKDOWN
Simply put, a culture of quality is one where all employees seamlessly integrate quality into their daily activities. Rather than a discrete quality management system checking and enforcing actions from afar, quality becomes automatically repeated and ālivedā by all colleagues. Access Qualioās helpful culture of quality resources HERE.

VC CORNER: Size matters [for a good deck]
Contributed byĀ Scott Alpizar, PhDĀ āĀ Every investor has an opinion on pitch decksāand many will (frustratingly) be completely different. I spend a lot of time looking at decks. Some are being pitched to my team for a potential investment and some are for our portfolio companies pitching to other investors at later stages. Through those experiences, Iāve seen some bad decks.
The purpose of a pitch is to stimulate interest, not to cover every aspect of your startup
Again, I typically work with academic founders. Most have multiple scientific presentations ready to go at a momentās notice but have never made a pitch deck. So, how do you do it? Well, you mainly need to balance your science (e.g., background information, validating data) with the business aspects (e.g., business model, go to market strategy, etc.). Easy right?
Not always - but recently one of our companies got the advice to follow Guy Kawasakiās pitch deck structure and make their deck more narrative/story based. I think it absolutely made their deck better, so letās break down what they did.
BRAZEN BREAKDOWN
Keep it short and sweet. Guyās main advice is 10 slides and under 20 minutes. Ten slides will force you to focus on the most important points, but donāt let it be limitingāyou still need to get the critical information in there. Just remember to balance that information with keeping interest, VCs can check out easily!
Think of it as a picture book. A strange mentality I know, but your deck should tell a story with graphics and images instead of words. Donāt read off your slidesāthe audience has probably already read them and are waiting for you to catch up. Show us instead!
Make your problem known. This is extremely important. Donāt brush over what the problem is to get to your solution. Make us care! Pull things out into the big pictureāwhat happens if this problem isnāt solved? Customer discovery can go a long way too! Talk to potential customers or patientsāitāll motivate you and help convince investors as well.
Do your (business) research. Youāre the expert on the science. What you may not know yet is how big your market will be, who your competition is, or exactly how youāll get to market. In some cases, you may not need to know this, and the right investor will help you figure it out. But having an idea and showing youāve put in effort to try to figure it out goes a long way!
If youāre a scientist-CEO, approach your pitch decks like your scientific presentationsāconstantly update them with new data. You may never feel ādoneā, but thatās okay! Take the feedback you get and continually iterate (you can also use tools like DocSend to get information on if your deck was opened and how much time viewers spent on which slides). If it can get you to a second conversation, youāre a heck of a lot closer to that investment, acquisition, or partnership. Good luck!
